The Problem
There are infrastructural deficits that decrease capacity and accessibility of meaningful opportunities. Governmental and non-governmental aid organizations are led by well-intended outsiders focusing on capacity building to address real problems but seldom phase out their presence. We see an alternative to the neocolonial systems that perpetuate the role of outside leaders as the primary ‘owners’ of social change.
There is a limited middle class in emerging economies with the education, training, and stability to become professionals and leaders who imagine the future of their development, creating a dependency on others who are less connected to the people and environment. Social and environmental impact studies and needs assessments often need to account for the long-term presence of experts.
